Mid Valley Farm — Helena Valley, Montana
Helena Valley, Montana

Our Story

A small family farm growing clean, honest food for our Helena neighbors.

Meet the farmers

We're Jorae & John

It all started with a few tomato plants in our backyard. One season turned into two, a couple of raised beds turned into a full plot, and before long we were hauling produce to the Helena Farmers' Market every Saturday morning.

We moved to our property in the Helena Valley with a simple goal: grow the best food we can without pesticides, herbicides, or shortcuts. Montana's Zone 4 climate makes it a challenge — late frosts, short seasons, wild temperature swings — but it also produces some of the most flavorful vegetables you'll ever taste.

Today we grow over 20 varieties for our CSA members, farmstand customers, and the folks who stop by the market on Saturday mornings. Everything is picked fresh, never sprayed, and grown right here on our little piece of the Valley.

How we grow

Our Growing Practices

We're not certified organic, but we follow organic principles and go beyond them. Every decision starts with soil health, biodiversity, and producing the cleanest food possible.

🐞

No Pesticides, Ever

We never spray synthetic pesticides on our crops. Instead, we rely on beneficial insects, row covers, and careful observation to manage pests naturally.

🌿

No Herbicides

Weeds are managed by hand, mulch, and cover crops. It's more work, but it means cleaner soil and safer produce for your family.

🌻

Companion Planting

We interplant crops that help each other thrive — basil with tomatoes, marigolds along the borders, beans fixing nitrogen for neighboring plants.

🌾

Cover Crops

Every fall we seed cover crops to protect the soil through Montana winters, add organic matter, and prevent erosion on our plots.

🪱

Composting & Soil Health

We compost all farm waste and kitchen scraps, building rich, living soil that feeds our plants from the ground up.

🫘

Seed Saving

We save seeds from our best performers each year, gradually selecting for varieties that thrive in Zone 4 conditions.
