From 3 Crates to a Dahlia Collection: Digging Tubers for Next Year!

JoRae · October 11, 2026

One of the most exciting parts of growing dahlias is discovering what’s happening beneath the soil at the end of the season. While we’ve spent the summer enjoying their beautiful blooms, the plants have been busy producing tubers underground—and now it’s time to dig them up before the ground freezes!

Last year, we had just three crates of dahlia tubers at this point in the season. This year, our collection has grown considerably! We added some new varieties this summer, and now we have all the tubers our plants produced to add to the collection. It’s exciting to see how much a flower crop can grow in just one season.

If you’re new to dahlias like we still are, one of the neatest things to learn is that those beautiful flowers are only part of the story. Each plant can produce a cluster of tubers that can be divided and grown into new plants the following year. That means we have the fun (and slightly overwhelming!) task of sorting through everything and figuring out just how many dahlias we’ll be able to grow next summer.

Getting the tubers out of the ground before a hard freeze is an important part of keeping our dahlia crop going. Once they’re dug and properly stored for winter, we can look forward to dividing them and preparing for another growing season.

We’re still learning as we go, and that’s one of the things we love about growing in general. Every season brings new varieties, new lessons, and new possibilities. It’s especially fun to think about how many more blooms we could have next year with this growing collection!

Now the digging is done, and we’re already dreaming about next summer’s flower garden. We can’t wait to see all those dahlia colors filling the farm again!
